Lost Shingles

“Is it possible to have the weathering taken care of before the need for replacement of missing shingles comes due?” – Local Home Improvement Contractor

“The weathering of roof shingles due to wind damage can often be done prior to needing replacement. In many cases the repair work can be accomplished by cleaning up debris, walking on top of the roof, using a high power washer and using a low pressure water hose to get rid of the remaining water and mud. We are the local preferred exterior house improvement contractor.”

“I live on a piece of property that has a small creek running through it and on top of the roof I’ve noticed a leaky pipe. When I go to haul off the water it just makes things worse since it won’t be so hot in the summer and it will be cold during the winter. Any ideas on how I can repair roof leaks without replacing all of the shingles?”

Whether you need to replace all or some of your missing shingles on your roof, you should first take a look at the damage and assess it’s severity. If you have high winds this could be the case as well. High winds can cause roof damage to be worse than other forms of roofing damage because of the resistance that the metal gives when it is hit. The more resistance there is to wind blows, the faster the roof will be damaged and you will need to repair the damage sooner.

How can I find out if I need to repair the roof or not? There are several signs that will help you know whether or not you need to replace the missing shingles on your roof. High water content is one of the signs. This means that the leak is on the lower part of the roofing instead of the top where the water is hitting the roofing. If you see high water content then you are in luck as soon as possible get to the leaking area and fix it. If the water is still present on top of the roof but not as high as the leak was then you can safely assume that you can wait and deal with the leaky roof problem while it’s high and the chances of it spreading become higher.

Another sign of high winds causing roof damage is loud noises. Loud noises come from underground pipes that are connected to your home and these pipes can start to leak when there are strong winds. If you have evidence of underground pipes that are leaking you should call a contractor right away to prevent further water damage.

When you are dealing with the sign of damage from the winds, damage from the rain, or leaks, you should always consult with your home insurance company first. If you are finding that the damages caused by the weather have caused more damage to your home than the actual roof leak then you may have to file a claim through your home insurance company. In this case, they will want to inspect your home for safety concerns and if they find any damages they will repair the damage immediately or will offer you a replacement so that your roof will be structurally sound and your belongings inside the home will remain safe. But if your home insurance company finds that the damages were caused by “unusual events” they will make you a claim for the difference between what the actual damage was and what you expect to pay for the repairs.

Roof leaks aren’t always the cause of structural damage. Other common causes of water damage to your home include appliances breaking, lightning, and fire. These types of cases usually only result in a loss of value and are easy to fix. So if you have reason to believe that your roof is leaking or you are noticing leaking near your roof, don’t delay making a claim for the value of your home. It’s better to know in advance that your roof isn’t worth as much as you think it is and to have it replaced sooner rather than later. It may not be easy to get the money upfront when you have lost the roof but you should at least get a replacement and an appraisal to figure out what your roof replacement cost will be, allowing you to budget accordingly.
